Frequently Asked Questions
Gameplay
How do I score points in Gridbage?+
Each row and column on the triangular grid is scored like a cribbage hand — fifteens (2 pts each), pairs (2 pts), runs (1 pt per card in the run), flushes (4 or 5 pts), and nobs (1 pt if your Jack matches the cut card's suit). The center card is shared by all rows and columns. After all cards are placed and the cut card is revealed, every complete line scores automatically.
What is the crib?+
The crib is a bonus hand scored at the end of each round. Each player discards 2 cards into it before placing cards on the grid. The dealer scores the crib — so strategy includes choosing which cards to throw in (or keep out of) the crib based on who the dealer is. The dealer alternates each hand.
What is the cut card?+
The cut card (also called the "starter") is drawn from the deck after all cards are placed and shared by both players. It scores in every line on the grid and in the crib. In Ludicrous Speed mode, the AI knows the cut card before the game even begins — and uses that information for every decision it makes.
What is a skunk — and a double skunk?+
A skunk occurs when the winning player reaches 121 before the loser reaches 91. A double skunk is when the loser hasn't reached 61. Gridbage tracks both for your statistics.
| 🏆 | 91 – 120 pts | Regular loss |
| 🦨 | 61 – 90 pts | Skunk |
| 🦨🦨 | 0 – 60 pts | Double skunk |
What is Duplicate Card mode?+
Duplicate Card mode deals the same cards to both you and your opponent across matched sets — you each play the other's hand. At the end, a full comparison table shows each hand's results side-by-side with a score differential. It's designed to eliminate luck entirely and measure pure decision-making skill. No lucky draws. No excuses.
Difficulty Levels
What's the difference between difficulty levels?+
🌱 Beginner — "I know a little cribbage..." The AI makes strategic mistakes and intentionally tosses useful cards into your crib.
⚔️ Intermediate — "I picked a bad week to...stop playing beginner." The AI plays optimally half the time and gifts you the other half.
💀 Expert — "To the Pain..." The AI seems like it reads your mind, plans ahead, and plays to win. No gifts. No mercy.
🚀 Ludicrous Speed — "Surely you can't be serious." The AI starts learning your game patterns and uses them for every decision. Pure computational carnage.
Can I change difficulty mid-game?+
Difficulty is set at the start of each game and cannot be changed during play. Start a New Game from the menu to choose a different level.
App & Technical
Does Gridbage require an internet connection?+
Solo play against the AI works completely offline — no internet, no account, no server communication of any kind. Play on a plane, in the woods, anywhere.
Gridbage with Friends (online multiplayer) requires an internet connection, but only when it's your turn or you're checking the lobby. The game is asynchronous — you don't need to be online at the same time as your opponent.
My stats were lost — can I recover them?+
Solo play stats are stored locally on your device only. If you deleted and reinstalled the app, restored from a backup, or reset your device, those stats may have been lost. We cannot recover local stats remotely — that's by design for your privacy.
Gridbage with Friends stats are stored in the cloud and will automatically sync back if you sign in again with the same Apple or Google account.
How do I report a bug?+
Email us at
support@gridbage.com with a description of what happened, what device and software version you're on, and any steps to reproduce. Screenshots always help. We read and respond to every message.
Does Gridbage collect any of my data?+
Solo play: no. Absolutely nothing is collected, transmitted, or stored outside your device. No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifiers.
Gridbage with Friends: yes, minimally. When you sign in and play online, we store your nickname, a randomly generated friend code, your win/loss record, and active game state in Google Firebase. We never collect your real name, email, location, or any other personal information. See our full
Privacy Policy for details.
Gridbage with Friends
How do I start playing Gridbage with Friends?+
Tap the 🌐 icon on the main screen to open the Gridbage with Friends lobby. Sign in with Apple or Google — one tap, no password needed. You'll be assigned a unique 6-character friend code. Share your code with anyone you want to challenge, or enter their code to send an invite.
Can I play with strangers, or only people I know?+
Only people you know. Gridbage with Friends uses friend codes — there is no random matchmaking, no public lobby, and no way for strangers to find you. You must exchange codes with someone directly to play them.
Is there chat or messaging in Gridbage with Friends?+
No. There is no chat, voice, messaging, or any communication between players. The only interaction is the game itself — placing cards, discarding, and scoring. This is intentional, and is part of why Gridbage with Friends is appropriate for all ages.
Does Gridbage with Friends play in real time or asynchronously?+
Asynchronously. You and your opponent do not need to be online at the same time. When it's your turn, the game updates and you'll see it the next time you open the app. You can have multiple games going simultaneously with different people.
What game modes are available in Gridbage with Friends?+
All the same modes as solo play: Regular or Duplicate Card, and either classic First to 121 scoring or Grid scoring. The person sending the invite picks the mode when creating the challenge.
What data does Gridbage with Friends store about me?+
Only what's needed to run the game: your chosen nickname, a randomly generated friend code, your win/loss record vs opponents, and current game state. We never store your real name, email address, phone number, location, or any other personal information. See our
Privacy Policy for full details.
